Marine Studies Institute
WELCOME TO THE MARINE STUDIES INSTITUTE (MSI): THE PUBLIC FACE OF MARINE SCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY, WITH MORE THAN 150 YEARS OF MARINE SCIENCE TEACHING AND RESEARCH.
Master of Marine Science and Management
I currently work as a Coastal Scientist for the Channel Coastal Observatory, the network leader of the National Network of Regional Coastal Monitoring Programmes of England (NNRCMP). As a network, we collect and analyse a range of datasets integral for the monitoring and management the English coastline. These include hydrodynamics, topographic beach profiles and baselines, aerial photography, lidar, bathymetry and habitat mapping (https://coastalmonitoring.org/).
My role involves managing our wave, tide and met instruments, quality controlling and reporting on the data produced, and also spending a lot of time out on surveys to collect beach topographic data!
The Master of Marine Science and Management programme equipped me with many of the skills I needed to start my career in coastal science, including GIS, coding, coastal surveying and analysis of coastal processes.
During the master’s programme, I also carried out a research project on mapping the carbon content of saltmarsh in Jervis Bay using aerial and CubeSat images. The project was a great way to develop extra skills during the programme and also a publication after graduation (https://doi.org/10.3390/rs14081782).
